The world of work is constantly changing. The Careers and Vocational Education and Training (VET) department at Moreton Bay College guides students to identify career options, develop ideas about careers and create plans for life after school.

Career lessons are timetabled in Year 10 and Year 12, and Students have access to information and consultations regarding career opportunities throughout their senior schooling at MBC, during lunch breaks and by appointment. Year 10 career lessons assist preparing students for their Years 11 and 12 subject selection. Students are encouraged to explore careers, research courses and participate in University and personality quizzes to assist with career opportunities and university courses. Gaining this knowledge provides understanding of pre-requisite requirements for university courses, enabling informed decisions for subject choices.  Year 12 career lessons focus on life after school. Students are guided through the application processes to ensure positive outcomes on tertiary education applications. Exploration of careers, work readiness, University applications and alternate pathways, allows students to be confident in their choices

VET at Moreton Bay College

Students in Years 11 and 12 are provided the opportunity to undertake a skills-based qualification through a Vocational Education and Training recognised course. Vocational Education is utilised to test industry, strengthen a career pathway or obtain particular knowledge and skills. This course becomes the sixth subject for a Senior student. Students in Years 11 and 12 are encouraged to consider their best learning outcomes with particular focus on career success. This may be to enrol for a career interest at TAFE, Mater Education or an alternate Registered Training Organisation (RTO) provider. Students may wish to start their career in a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT). The outcomes are varied and on successful completion, students will achieve a qualification in addition to their QCE.

Students undertake can VET learning at a Certificate II, Certificate III, Certificate IV or Diploma level by attending classes one day per week at a TAFE Queensland, Mater Education or alternative private RTO (off-campus), completing the qualification online or completing a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT). Upon successful completion, VET qualifications give a student between 4 and 8 credits towards Year 12 Queensland Certificate of Education. In the new QCE system, achievement of a VET Certificate III or above, in combination with results in General subjects, can contribute to the calculation of a student’s Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

Work experience

Work experience

Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 can participate in work experience during school holidays or on weekends. Work experience is arranged by the VET Coordinator together with the family of the student to ensure appropriate work experience is sourced. Work experience can provide practical experience and develop workplace skills, help students make informed career decisions, give insght into diversity in the workplace and, among other things, provide students with an opportunity to relate school studies with a workplace.
