Teachers make a difference

In recent years, educational research has confirmed something most of us already know, teachers make a difference in students’ lives. Indeed, Professor John Hattie’s 2003 research provided quantitative evidence that teacher is the single most important driver of student outcomes, after family background, accounting for about 30 per cent of the variance in student achievement.
This week, I interviewed one of our teachers who has made a difference – Mrs Sheryl Mackenzie – and has recently been named as a Fellow by the Business Educators Association of Queensland (BEAQ) for her longstanding, ‘effective’ and respected teaching of Business, Legal Studies and Accounting.
Below is a brief conversation with a teacher who has had a positive and profound impact on student outcomes in her 14 years of service at MBC.
